Factors that influenced Hamlet’s inner madness Mental illness refers to a wide variety of mental health conditions — disorders that affect your mood, thinking and demeanor. Some examples of mental illness include depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, eating disorders, addictive behaviors, and bipolar disorder. The definition of madness is the state of being mad; insanity. Madness is a condition of the mind which eliminates all rational thought leaving an individual with no proper conception of what is happening around him/her. Madness typically occurs in the minds of individuals that have experienced an event or series of events that their mind simply cannot cope with and to avoid their harsh reality, they fall into a state of insanity. Hamlet’s character shares many symptoms with patient of madness. This erratic tendency makes his character hard to predict, and allows his actions to be justifiably random while affecting his behavior as a character. Hamlet’s distraught outlook creates unstable mad ness as time progresses. One component of Hamlet’s insanity, is viewing of his dead predecessor and father. Hamlet is becoming insane because he keeps witnessing his father’s spirit. The ghost says â€Å"Do not forget†, which suggests that the ghost is haunting Hamlet (shakespeare 25). Since no one else can hear the ghost but Hamlet, he may believe that it is a figment of his imagination.
